What A Cool Idea!

I was just tuned into this novel podcasting idea today: DVD commentaries in podcast form. Damn! What didn't I think of that first? Anywho, here is a DVD commentary by The Spoilers for the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. This particular commentary features none other than the Code Monkey himself, Jonathan Coulton. Just pop the DVD in and press play along with the podcast and you are transported to an MST-type world. Damn, what a great idea.

I had the honor of being a guest on Today in Podcasting last week. We chatted about the show, the podcaster art calendar, about podcasting in general and broken caveman speak. One of the hosts had some serious Skype problems and couldn't talk in complete sentences. Poor guy. It's actually one of the best interviews I feel I've done about the show. Plus, Today in Podcasting is a great podcast. My part comes in around 34:00 minutes into the show.

My Collaboration with Dave Devries

On show 108, our guest Dave Devries mentioned that we would collaborate on a drawing after the podcast. After we went off air, we went downstairs and very sleepily worked on a drawing together. I only wish it would had been earlier and we would have had more time. As it turned out, we were both dead tired and all I could think of drawing was a 50's style robot. Dave ended up doing most of the work, but he did an incredible job of inking in my lame pencil. Anywho, here is the fruits of one of the coolest weekends I've spent in a while. Thanks Dave for trying to do the best with my art.

Tonight's show is a total geek fest, as we welcome legendary comic book artist Dave Devries into the Nobby Annex studios. You may remember Dave from last summer's show 50, where he talked about his project called The Monster Engine. He returns on this show to discuss the atrwork of our kids for The Monster Engine 2. He also talks about comics and art in general. He's a real comic book guy. Crashing at our house! It's a definite must hear!

Photoshop Image with 15,000 Layers

For those of you who use Photoshop, you should get a kick out of this. Even if you don't, you will still get a kick out of it.

Artist Bert Monroy released his latest Photoshop painting this week after 11 months of work with an estimated 2,000 hours. The attention to detail is amazing in this 10 foot wide poster
• The image size is 40 inches by 120 inches.
• The flattened file weighs in at 1.7 Gigabytes. (Thats flattened, WITHOUT the layers!)
• It took eleven months (close to 2,000 hours) to create.
• The painting is comprised of close to fifty individual Photoshop files.
• Taking a cumulative total of all the files, the overall image contains over 15,000 layers.
• Over 500 alpha channels were used for various effects.
• Over 250,000 paths make up the multitude of shapes throughout the scene.

My Dot-Comic

I think I may have posted this at one time, but I think enough time has passed that I can repost it. Plus, I was egged on by Nic at the Comics Symposium to put it on our blog. So here it is: my short foray into web comics.

The time was circa 2001, a pre- 9/11 summer and I was looking for a way to merge my writing and art into one fun project. So I came up with IP a dot-comic that dealt with superheroes who only had their superpowers when they were logged onto the net. A funny idea. And it proved to be successful up to a point. But I just ran out of steam. Anywho, it was a fun experiment and I have some pretty cool art to show for it.

More Coulton Cross Promotion

Yesterday, we made an overture to you, dear blog reader, to help us bring musician Jonathan Coulton to our fine city. We're still hoping that those of you who aren't in Cleveland still ask Mr. Coulton to come out to Cleveland. And if you do, we expect you to come to Cleveland and watch him play his music and wash our cars. But to further entice Mr. Coulton to come to town ( as well as thank him for letting us play his music on a regular segment on the show) I've decided to draw original artwork to go along with his Thing A Week.

This week, the song is called When You Go and it has nothing to do with Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy cartoon. I just have a thing for Nancy. You can purchase and download the song from his site. You can also subscribe to his podcast and get the song when he uploads it. But if you can, give the guy some cash. If not for his music, then for the hell of a job he does mowing lawns.

As you probably know, Nora and I are big Jonathan Coulton fans and supporters. Along with the new segment on our show, Thing A Week, Mr. Coulton has also agreed to wash our cars during summer months and hopefully, paint the trim on our house. Here's the problem: Mr. Coulton really has no reason to come to Cleveland to do these things.

Doing Anything This Saturday?

We'll probably talk about this on our upcoming show, but I just wanted to remind people that if you are in the Cleveland area this weekend, I will be making an appearance at the Lakeland College Comics Symposium Saturday, April 8. I will be one of the featured speakers of the day, along with Lee Salem, Executive VP and Editor for Universal Press Syndicate and American Splendor's Harvey Pekar. I will be speaking about the Bill Watterson podcast from last November. This event is free and open to the public, and most likely I will be podcasting from it.
