The PodSafe Christmas Song

Here is the Podsafe Christmas Song by itself. Feel free to play it on your show, play it on your iPod or digital music device and share it with all your friends. Just make sure you credit Jonathon Coulton, CC Chapman, Big Mike and Just Sue and, of course, Jawbone Radio.

BTW, here are the lyrics to the song for those who are interested:

We want a podsafe Christmas song
We want a song that's safe to play
Don't think us rude, we don't want to get sued
By the thugs at the RIAA
We want a podsafe Christmas song
Santa don't delay
Give us a podsafe Christmas song to celebrate Christmas day.

Here's a special mini-mini cast where we let people know about our super secret doings. It's a Podsafe Christmas Song by Jonathon Coulton and friends. You'll also get the song by itself in the feed.

Enjoy and Merry Christmas! :)

It's the beta version for the next level menu for TV. Apparently, they are tying in with online content. I'm pretty unsure what kind of impact this should have on the podcasting world, but it's a pretty cool step to say the least. Check out more exclusive photos and the story here.

There seems to be some controversy brewing around the 700 Hoboes project.

Apparently, a few illustrations have been either banned or removed from the Flickr set. This includes all of my drawings, but most notably, all of the wonderful drawings by illustrator Ape Lad were removed from the Flickr set. This comes on the heels of a Boing Boing story from earlier in the week that the 700 hoboes project had reached 100 drawings. Not only that, but Ape Lad's drawings were being used to illustrate the stories on BB and on Drawn! Talk about a slap in the face.

Now, I understand that the original call to action by Boing Boing was for 700 different illustrators to draw one hobo each. But come on now. Would it really be a terrible thing to see more than one version of the same hobo? Would it be awful for one illustrator to draw more than one hobo? Would the world be worse off if there were two or possibly three versions of Crane T. Eyebrow Smeller? I think not. In fact, I think it would be rather cool to see different interpretations. IMHO, it makes the set better and more interesting than it already is.

So I think I'll try drawing one more and see if shows up in the set. I've been promised by the Flickr staff that my drawings are again public. In any event, Ape Lad has started his own group to showcase all of his phenomenal hobo drawings. And some other artists are joining this renegade "bum group" as well. As fas as I know, this is the only place where you can see the missing Hobo drawings.

Check out the group here. And in the spirit of the holiday, let's give thanks that you can still see the drawings on the net. For now.

UPDATE: Looks like BB has taken notice of this travesty as well.

UPDATE #2: Here's a clever one -- take a photo of your hobo and upload it to Flckr! Brilliant!

UPDATE #3: We encourage everyone interested in contributing to the 700 Hoboes Project join the Flickr 700 Hoboes Group. Unfortunately, we can't do anything about the other hobo illustrations that aren't NIPSAed on Flickr. But with any luck, this project will go on much longer than the original 700 expectation.

Al Roker
Originally uploaded by jawboneradio.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. There has been a bit of controversy with the 700 Hoboes project. Apparently, I can't have a Flickr set of just illustrations. So a few cartoonists, myself included, were banned (temporarily) from the project. Anyway, I've started uploading some photos to my Flickr account and this is one of them. My meeting with a wax Al Roker last Feburary in Vegas.

Nora is off tonight, so I handle the big interview with Amanda Congdon and Andrew Baron from Rocketboom. Amanda was one the first guests on Jawbone "way back when". I owe a lot to Rocketboom, and it's always a pleasure to have them on the show. Also, you'll hear a mini-round up with my fellow panelists at the PSRA Student Day this past week, including Mike from Playaway. Listen in now!

Who Wants A Jawbone Radio Podcast Action Figure?

I nearly fell off my chair when I read this. Looks like I'm going to be an action figure.

"EUGENE, OR (T100 NEWS): Former MTV video jockey and "father" of Podcasting, Adam Curry is poised to release a line of action figures based on the many of the hosts of today's hot phenomenon called Podcasting. The figures, to be relased by toy giant Hasbro, are small representations of some of the hottest Podcast shows including "The Dawn and Drew Show," "Jawbone Radio," and even Curry's own show called "The Daily Source Code."

Other characters such as the "Dawn and Drew" figures have props that go along with the figures, such as a replica of the farmhouse they broadcast from with real working farm animals. There's even a small computer inside the farmhouse that they would use to record the shows in real life. The Jawbone Radio character is wearing a small T-shirt with artwork from the real host and artist of the show, Len."

Wow! What an honor. :)

Thanks to Mr. X for the heads up!

My buddy, Scott Johnson from EL Radio is out of town til tomorrow. But I couldn't resist posting this. It's a drawing of what could become a series of portraits of Extra Life Listeners. Now, I know these guys have a sense of humor (hopefully) and can see that this is all done in good fun. But I got the idea from listening to one of his previous shows with a video game player who hated pretty much every video game out there. Anyway, if these take off, I'll probably do more. Enjoy!

...and surprisingly, it doesn't sound too bad. I wasn't at the expo this past weekend, but apparently these guys were. Anyone who went please fill me in with what these guys are all about. I was pretty impressed that they made this goofy site called Sell Out Big Time, poking fun of ads in podcasts. Upload your show and have parody ads placed in. Cool idea. Gets a thumbs up in my book.

I might be willing to give this a whirl.

The 700 Hoboes Project

#596: Kerosene Soaked Tom

I saw this on Boing Boing and Drawn last week. It's called the 700 Hoboes project. An writer named John Hodgmanwrote this piece.. It's basically him reading 700 fictional hobo names. Well, different artists have decided to try to illustrate all 700 of them. There's a pretty good group of them on Flickr. So I decided to add my art to the foray. Seems like a pretty fun project. I'll probably do more, if people like em. that is.

Just in time for the holidays, the Official 2006 Podcaster Art Calendar is now available. It has every single podcast drawing I have done over the past year, as well as some extra special drawings done specifically for the calendar.

And for those of you who have been voting in our poll as to whether or not Nora and I should show ourselves, you should be pleasantly surprised. There is a sketch of Nora and I done specifially for the calendar. So if that's not a reason to buy, I don't know what is.

Podcast Rant

Ah. yes...it's back to doing some podcast art. This time I am creating some quick new art that will be going into a 2006 Calendar of my artwork. There has been some interest from the podcasting community for a calendar and I plan on delivering. Up above, you'll see some artwork for the Podcast Rant podcast. Mighty fine!

Darth Vader for the Restart Podcast
Here's a little something for the folks over at the Restart Podcast. Any reason to draw Vader is fine by me!

Chewbacca and Yoda
And finally, here is something that I did for the folks over at Smart Popcorn.com.

And finally, here's a little something for my friend, Brad at theWhole Lotta Nonsense Podcast. It was a drawing based on a panel from Pearls Before Swine.

I was honored to be a part of Scott Johnson's panel of experts on Extra Life Radio's Show 57 last night. We talked a lot of smack about a lot of things including bad movies, the Portable Media Expo and vidcasting. Good fun was had by all and no Irish were hurt during the process.

As I've mentioned on this blog and on our show, ExtraLife remains one of my favorite podasts out there. Great sound, engaging and always funny. Plus, now it has me on it, so ever bettah!

A Guided Tour of Indie Podcastland

On the heels of the Portable Media Expo next week in Cali, Clinton at Comedy4Cast has produced a wonderful little cast that is basically one big inside joke. If you're a podcaster, or have been listening to podcasts, you'll find the latest episode to be a fun little game to play and also a great listen. See if you can hear the names of over 60 different podcasts (including Jawbone and some other favorites) woven wonderfully into the story. Its' supah! Great job, Clinton!

Take a listen to show 38 here.

I'm probably a day late and dollar short on this, but I found it too funny not to link up.

I don't know how many people reading this blog personally know me, but if you do, you'll know why I find this so funny.

I added a new mini-poll question on the righthand sidebar. Please feel free to vote on it. I was having some problems last week with some popups on the site that I think were caused by the poll. If you experience these problems, please let me know so I can pull the poll off the site.

In the meantime, go forth and vote!

Jawbone on Drawn! The Illustration Blog

My gosh...what a week. I just found out I was listed on one of my favorite blogs, Drawn. They linked up the Bill Watterson cast this afternoon. I couldn't be happier. :) Well, I would be happier if they linked up my Monster Art Set or Podcaster Art on Flickr....(cough, cough)

Anyway, it's an honor. Here's the link. (Thanks, Patricia!)

The article about vidcasting that I was interviewed for last week came out this morning on Wired.com, and I play the part of the Lone Dissenting Voice.

I talked about this topic on the show a bit and I want to officially go on the record here as saying that I don't think vidcasting is a totally bad idea. There is some serious potential. As a listener pointed out to me, our friends Bryan and Gene are doing their own vidcast. But their vidcast is in a television format and is powerful enough to keep you entertained.

I will stand by my statement that watching a video version of a podcast is not the way to go. Unless you are Howard Stern and there is some interest in seeing what is going on in your studio, watching hosts chat back and forth is simply not interesting.

What didn't make it into the article were my comments about the production of vidcasts. I personally feel that it takes a totally different skillset to produce a worthwhile vidcast. The beauty of podcasting is that you can multitask while listening. You can sit on a train or in your car and still be immersed in the show. A vidcast needs 100% of your attention. And you have to think a bit differently when producing in the visual medium. And my opinion is that few people can make the transition from "radio" to "tv".

Anywho, I hope I don't come off as too much of a wet blanket, but someone had to take the opposite side. If you're interested, you can read the whole story here.

What a day. Not only is show 81 our most downloaded podcast to date, but Castewar from Track Zero added us in the Wikipedia entry about Calvin and Hobbes. Very cool.

Jawbone #81: In Search of Bill Watterson

On this episode of Jawbone, I go in search for an American cartooning icon, the creator of Calvin and Hobbes, Bill Watterson. Out of the public spotlight for a decade, Watterson remains incredibly elusive and private. With my Sony mic and IRiver in tow, I travel to Chagrin Falls, Ohio and try to track down one of the most influential comic artists of the 20th century. And what I get is more than I ever expected. ON EDIT: The host for our podcast is having some serious issues and you may have had some problem getting this file. I have a temporary link up until their issues are resolved. I'm also looking for better, more reliable long term hosting plans. So if you have any tips, please send em along. Sorry for the inconvenience, folks.

ON EDIT: This podcast just also got Boing Boinged by none other than Cory Doctorow himself. Hello to all you Boing Boing readers! Hopefully, my server will be able to handle all your requests. :) (Thanks for being down, Libsyn -- that's sarcasm, in case you were wondering.)

ON EDIT: The file is now updated to point to our original host. Hopefully all of you who were trying to get it earlier and dealing with time outs and 404s can now get the file. (fingers crossed)

Online Gaming, Part 2

Ok, so I'm getting a lot of responses on playing World of Warcraft. But what I really want to know is if anybody is going to be playing this game:

Preferably on a PS2, online, with a headset. I wanted to play last year and all my buddies were on PC servers, which I couldn't access. I know for a fact that I am getting this game next week. So is anyone out there going to able to play? Anyone? Anyone?

ON EDIT: I got the game on Monday night and am currently playing it. It rocks. I love playing instant action as a Wampa on Hoth or killing tons of Gungans on Naboo. If anyone else is up for playing the PS2 version online, please drop me a line or just leave a comment here.
