What A Way To Kick Off A Holiday Weekend

Looks like the Blazin Hazen controversy threw us off more than we thought. After all the yelling, wailing and the gnashing of teeth over the cancelling of the interview, my co-host Nora suffered a bad case of laryngitis and is unable to do a show. Not to worry though, you can catch Nora this weekend on a special Trading Podcasters episode of Israelisms. Nora sits in for Charley's wife Carol, and while I haven't heard the interview yet, I'm willing to bet that it's a real hoot. Hopefully we'll be back soon with show 113.

A few weeks ago, we posted a link to a fan-based DVD commentary by Jawbone Troubador, Jonathan Coulton for Raiders of the Lost Ark. Pretty cool idea, no? Well, what's even cooler is that someone has made software that let's you sync up the fan-based commentary with the DVD. Developer Steve writes: "Users simply download a commentary, then assign it to any portion of the DVD. From that point on, the DVD and commentary stay in sync -- even as you fast-forward and rewind the DVD. Cool stuff. "

Cool stuff indeed, you can check it out and download it (windows only for now) at Sharecrow.net.

Incidentally, I'd like to be able to do a show like this in the future where we're commentating along with a specific DVD. Stay tuned for details!

From Wayne in the UK: These guys sang a pretty ballsy song for the Eurovision Song Contest -- kind of like American Idol in the UK only with bands, it would seem. The song proclaims the band is the winner of the contest, although they came in 6th place. Oh well, can't blame them for trying.

Also. if you're looking for a band that has a lot of spirit gum, prosthetic cheeks and fangs, Lordi should tide you over until the next GWAR concert. Just watch.

Blazin' Refuses to Blaze Us

Bad news in Jawboneland, folks. For those of you who were looking forward to our interview with internet rap phenom, Denny "Blazin" Hazen, it looks like you're in for a disappointment. Denny's people cancelled the interview after hearing DJ Hojo's remix of his smash 80's hit, "Average Homeboy." Believe me, we are as sad as you folks are. Denny's right from our own backyard and it would have been great to have this average homeboy on the show.

Well, at least Kevin Federline still loves us.

"Lost" Jumping the Shark?

According to one pundit, they are coming pretty close with this "alternate reality" game that has just started.

For me, Lost came dangerously close to jumping the shark when it tagged a Hanso Foundation spot with the URL http://www.subLYMONal.com, which was a less-than-subtle tie-in for Sprite. I say it came close because, by and large, the Sprite brand didn’t distract from what was going on in the game. And the subLYMONal site did fulfill its function, which was to provide a clue for game participants.

Tom Cruise is a tough guy to draw. I did no less than 5 sketches of him to get to this point. Plus, it was tough finding decent reference material for the kind of face I wanted him to make. Regardless, here it is!

Duct Tape Podcasts Are Back, Baby!

As some of may know, from time to time, I produce other podcasts through my "real" business. (Yes, I do work for a living.) Last year, I started doing a series of podcasts for Duck Brand Duct Tape around their Avon Heritage Duct Tape Festival in Avon, Ohio. This year, we're talking about the festival and a whole lot more. The podcasts are roughly 10 minutes long and cover an array of topics, including some of the cool stuff that people have created with duct tape, including prom outfits. Not only that, but I think the main character is an Undead Priest, which is my main character in WOW. (Just hit level 50 the other day, BTW, ding!) Nora hasn't seen this yet, but I'm sure when she does she will definitely think the world has gone plum crazy! Check it out!

Last Night's Weird Survivor Finale Moment

I don't know how many other people reading this blog are fans of Survivor: Exile Island, but Nora and I have been watching it and we're big fans of the show. Last night was the big finale and it found Fighter Pilot Terry Deitz up against freeloading yoga instructor Aras Hausmanfredgensen and chesty Medical Sales Rep Dannielle someone or another. We were big fans of Terry through the entire show. He dominated in challenges and really did deserve to win the show based on his competitive spirit.

But he said something last night that made us think that perhaps there was more to his rivarly between million dollar winner, Aras and himself. The question that host Jeff Probst asked was about the father/son type rivalry between Aras and Terry. This is what Terry said.This will probably end up in the feed for our show and many people will be wondering the same thing we were wondering when we watched it last night...WTF was Terry talking about?

This is pretty cool. The dudes over at Tra5hTa1k created a video for the Jonathan Coulton song Code Monkey. It was created using the site The Movies. That's pretty cool in itself, but what's even cooler is that some of my code monkey artwork (the blig blue monkey I drew for the T-shirt) made it into the video! Ok, so the video is cooler, but hey I can toot my horn a bit, right? Watch it now.

The show's creative team, including co-creator Damon Lindelof and executive producer Carlton Cuse, have engineered a sprawling interactive challenge to keep viewers immersed in the Lost universe during the hiatus between the end of Season Two and the start of Season Three. Officially dubbed "The Lost Experience," the globe-spanning game will incorporate multiple media platforms (including online and television) and feature a distinct storyline outside the plot currently unfolding on TV's most mysterious deserted island.

I Crush Everything

Ok, I never say this, but I am on a roll. Here is the latest "over-wagging" image for the Coulton Karaoke CD. It's for the song "I Crush Everything" -- a song about a Giant Squid. Over the top. Way over the top. But hey, I'm nothing if not prolific.

About this image: For years, (ever since I was about 18 or so), I've been trying to draw like one of my idols, Bill Sienkiewicz.I bought Stray Toasters and poured over the pages studying the lines and techniques, trying to mimic the style. It used to kill me that I couldn't paint like him. I fell apart at the bristol board and just gave up, disheartened. Flash forward to the digital age. I buy a Wacom, learn Photoshop and voila! I can draw!

Actually, it hasn't been that simple. It has literally taken me years to get this right. And for the first time, I feel I've done it. So, this is a total homage to one of the great masters of comic art and art in general. I am gracious for the inspiration.

Ok. I admit that I am going WAY overboard on these karaoke CD images. Way overboard. But I can't help it. I'm inspired. This is for a song called "I'm A Mason Now"and for some odd reason, this is my homage to werewolves. Incidentally, Dave Devries commented that he thinks my current work is looking like a cross between Ralph Steadman's and Gerald Scarfe. I wasn't familar with Steadman, but I love Scarfe. So I'll take whatever I can get.

Bozo's Lament

If you haven't noticed, I am having a ton of fun experimenting with this upcoming Jonathan Coulton Karaoke CD. This one is for the song Bozo's Lament. In some ways, I think I'm going above what was expected of this project. But the way I look at it, he put enough time into the actual songs that they sound polished and professional. The least I can do is come up with art that fits it. Incidentally, this is some of the best damn stuff I've done in my entire life. Where the hell was the inspiration before? Jeez...
