I Heard it On A Podcast

Got this link from fellow Podcast Outlaw, Brian Pipa. It should be the national anthem for podcasting. The song is called "On A Podcast" by a band called Cruisebox. Simply awesome.

After I hear the song, I shoot an e-mail to the band, suggesting to them that they create a "radio edit" of the song. Ridiculous notion, I know, since that's the whole idea of the song. No FCC, no rules. Say anything you want...yadda yadda yadda. Well, when I get an e-mail back, I find out that we, meaning Jawbone, were partly responsible for inspiring the song!

Here's an excerpt from the band's blog:

"This music weblog (mlog?) is our way of saying “thanks” to the grassroots pioneers of podcasting. To everyone who said: “Screw Clear Channel…screw the FCC…let’s fuckin’ kick it.” To the thousands of incredibly cool, talented and entertaining “as-yet-podcasting-unknowns.” To the big names of the podosphere like Dawn and Drew and Keith and the girl and Len and Nora and Brian and C.C. and Corby and on and on. And, of course, to Adam Curry."

Wow. We're blown away. To be mentioned such company really means a lot. And it's an inspiration to us too. So, go and download the song now. It rocks and it sums up a lot about how we feel about this podcasting revolution.

A Tribute to Betty Page

We were out book shopping this weekend at a discount book sale, and I saw a cover that caught my eye. It was a cartoon of a chick in a devil costume. I really liked the image, and thought it would be cool to do a version of a Devil Chick for the Monster Art Project. Although it doesn't really fit in with that project, I think it makes a cool image nonetheless. Consider this a tribute to the Betty Page pinups from the 1950's.

That 70's Chick

A quick study in color and design, inspired by something I saw in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory this weekend. I really just wanted to draw the background and I needed a subject for the foreground. I drew the girl in another monster drawing that I haven't colored yet and I thought she looked cool and needed her own drawing. For those of who you are keeping score, the girl's costume inspired by a terrible film from MST3K called Angel's Revenge.

Count Chocula Attacks!

Continuing the theme of monsters and cereal, here is my take on the infamous Count Chocula.



I'm begining to wonder if anyone is even seeing these drawings. No one seems to be commenting. Maybe that's for the better, I suppose.

Frankenberry Unchained

I started a new subset of drawings that are going into the Monster Art Project last night. I was a big fan of the Monster Cereals growing up, and always loved the characters. Frankenberry, Count Chocula, Boo Berry, Frute Brute...simply awesome stuff.



So I decided to do a series of drawings based on these loveable creatures, but instead interpret them as the real monsters they were inspired by. So here is my first take on the most colorful of the monster cereals, Frankenberry:

The article gives Jawbone probably the highest compliment ever, comparing our show to Jerry Seinfeld. What a great way to start the day.

Etched in Stone

Got this in the Jawbone mailbox from Redboy and Absolute Amy, who are currently overseas in China adopting a new baby. It's my drawing of them, etched in stone!



I think that's the first time I've ever had my work etched in some sort of stone. Very cool.

The Vampire Waitress

I'm going monster crazy over here. So here is a suggestion from Nora, The Vampire Waitress.



I used Vampirella as a model for the Vampire. She's the only thing I think of when I think of female vampires. There was a great reference photo of her on the cover of the DVD for Plan 9 from Outer Space. I ended up watching part of the film while I inked this in. What a complete and utter waste of time. If anyone can decipher what Tor Johnson says in his first scene in the movie, please let me know.

More from the Monster Art project...this is a nod to the old EC comics from the 1950s and also to one of my favorite artists of all time, Mr. Jack Davis.

Jawbone #58: They Might Be Podcasters

Nora's back is killing her. But that doesn't stop us from doing a show (partially) from KidsFest in downtown Cleveland and try to track down our elusive interview with John Flansburgh and John Linnell, better known as They Might be Giants. The show turns out to be incredibly cool and one of the best rock shows we have ever seen, even if it was aimed at kids. It was our kids first rock show, and our first rock concert as a family, it was certainly a memory to be cherished. Unfortunately, the ubercool souveniers we got from the show ended up being stolen. Will we ever get the chance to talk to the Johns? Listen and find out what happened.

Jawbone #57: TomB After Midnight

On this episode of Jawbone, we have a very important guest -- our youngest son joins us for our intro and outro and he makes weird clicking noises with his mouth.

However, we also talk to ubercool commercial artist and all-around good guy, Tom Bagley. You may have noticed us referencing Tom's work on our blog. He has been a huge inspriation for the current monster art that I have been working on. He has a very cool 50's retro style that is influenced by EC horror comics and 60's Horrorzines like Creepy and Eerie.

More 50's Horror Style Kitsch

Add another monster to the collection -- here's one of my faves from growing up, The Creature from the Black Lagoon. One of our favorite deceased TV shows, MST3K, totally ripped the sequel to this film apart. But I never stopped loving the Creature. Incidentally, what a great costume design for the 50s. I was always amazed by the originality. Ubercool.

Testing Out A New Technique

I was totally stoked by seeing the art of Tom Bagley this past week, that I decided I wanted to adopt some of his style into the artwork I'm doing. I used my friends over at Hometown Tales as test subjects and I'm pretty pleased with the results. This technique obviously takes a little longer, but the effect is extremely cool.
