Adam Hughes Five Part Sketching Video

Man! What I wouldn't have given for the Internets when I was a young lad learning how to draw. Continuing with the art-themed posts as of late, I was sent this collection of sketching videos from comic artist Adam Hughes. It's like Scott Johnson's Diary of A Cartoonist on steroids. Great insight into the whole process of drawing from concept to finish, plus it's just damn fun to watch. What you're watching above is part one of five. But definitely check out all of them. Thanks to Tracy for this incredible link!

Fans of Lost: Take Note

Whoa, if you are a fan of Lost, you'll definitely want to check this out:
Fans of ABC's Lost are about to find a slew of compelling reasons to pay extra close attention to the smash hit drama—even after the current season ends. The show's creative team, including co-creator Damon Lindelof and executive producer Carlton Cuse, have engineered a sprawling interactive challenge to keep viewers immersed in the Lost universe during the hiatus between the end of Season Two and the start of Season Three. Officially dubbed "The Lost Experience," the globe-spanning game will incorporate multiple media platforms (including online and television) and feature a distinct storyline outside the plot currently unfolding on TV's most mysterious deserted island.

Looks VERY cool. Check out the site here. Courtesy of AdCritic.com.

I Crush Everything

Ok, I never say this, but I am on a roll. Here is the latest "over-wagging" image for the Coulton Karaoke CD. It's for the song "I Crush Everything" -- a song about a Giant Squid. Over the top. Way over the top. But hey, I'm nothing if not prolific.

About this image: For years, (ever since I was about 18 or so), I've been trying to draw like one of my idols, Bill Sienkiewicz.I bought Stray Toasters and poured over the pages studying the lines and techniques, trying to mimic the style. It used to kill me that I couldn't paint like him. I fell apart at the bristol board and just gave up, disheartened. Flash forward to the digital age. I buy a Wacom, learn Photoshop and voila! I can draw!

Actually, it hasn't been that simple. It has literally taken me years to get this right. And for the first time, I feel I've done it. So, this is a total homage to one of the great masters of comic art and art in general. I am gracious for the inspiration.

Link Dump: Round Up Of Random Weird Stuff Issue 2

Once again, the Jawbone Gmail box fills with fun and excitement and once again it is time to do a link dump. Here ya go! Enjoy!

GUEST UPDATE: Robot Uprising author and Show #98 guest, Dr. Daniel Wilson looks like he's one step closer to having his book made into a movie. Look who has been tapped to star in it. Thanks for the link Matt!

-----

Speaking of comic artists, I'm gettin' tons o' links to other cool ones out there. Check out these doodlers, courtesy of 700 Hoboes compadre, Ben (with comments from Ben):

Nate Lovett: "In my mind a very underrated artist. He's got a very Ben Caldwell like style. I keep making fun of the fact that he's going to be a huge success in a matter of seconds and we should all just thank the Intarweb for letting him slum with us. He's in Columbus."

Jeremy Dale "He's a long time friend of mine since the time when there was a Wizard School message board. He's currently doing his own book through Ronin Studios and has done some work for Image on Todd Nauck's Wildguard."

Loston Wallace "He is just a great guy and good friend. He's a pro comic artist who's done work on Elvira and other things for Image and DC (that I know of) and is currently working with Micah Harris on a book called Strange Passages. He's VERY knowledgeable and one of the most skillfull artist I know.."

Stay tuned to future shows with possible interviews with these guys!

Get Code Monkey Gear!

Seems like I've been doing a lot of work lately for Jonathan Coulton. And I'm okay with that. After he lets you come upstairs up from the basement for food, he's actually a pretty nice guy. Now available due to popular demand is Code Monkey Gear with art and design done by yours truly. In my opinion, the blue monkey version is pretty sweet. It has a code version of the Jonathan Coulton Code Monkey song. It make great gift for special Code Monkey in your life. Go check out now.

Ok. I admit that I am going WAY overboard on these karaoke CD images. Way overboard. But I can't help it. I'm inspired. This is for a song called "I'm A Mason Now"and for some odd reason, this is my homage to werewolves. Incidentally, Dave Devries commented that he thinks my current work is looking like a cross between Ralph Steadman's and Gerald Scarfe. I wasn't familar with Steadman, but I love Scarfe. So I'll take whatever I can get.

Whoa!

Talk about a surreal moment. As you probably know, we here at Jawbone Radio are huge fans of John Hodgman, The Areas of My Expertise and the 700 Hoboes. Well, imagine my complete surprise to see Mr. Hodgman on the front page of Apple.com! Mr. Hodgman plays the part of the PC in a humanization of Mac and PC. Amazing!

You can listen to Jawbone #88 for Mr. Hodgman's palindromic appearance on our podcast. And see all the ads here. Thanks to Blogjones for the link.

Jawbone: LIVE!

Just a reminder, the Jawbone Live show will be happening tomorrow night at 9:30 PM EDT. If you want to be a part of it, get a Skype account and add "jawboneradio" to your list. Oh, it would help to have a mic or headset to chat with us. We'll try to be on as close to the time as possible and if you don't get on right away, be patient. Looking forward to hearing from all of you.

There's Always Time For A Good Rant

I've been meaning to post this for a while now. It's a new site about ranting and raving called "Bitch About Tech." It's a pretty neat idea created by someone who shall remain nameless. And hey, after all, who can resist a good rant? Speaking of which, here is one of my favorites.

Caption This: 5-1-06

In honor of the First of May, here's a little sumpin' special for Caption This. Enjoy all! Get out there and bring your old lady or at least your favorite girl.

Bozo's Lament

If you haven't noticed, I am having a ton of fun experimenting with this upcoming Jonathan Coulton Karaoke CD. This one is for the song Bozo's Lament. In some ways, I think I'm going above what was expected of this project. But the way I look at it, he put enough time into the actual songs that they sound polished and professional. The least I can do is come up with art that fits it. Incidentally, this is some of the best damn stuff I've done in my entire life. Where the hell was the inspiration before? Jeez...

Happy First of May everyone! Get out there and entertain the world!

What A Cool Idea!

I was just tuned into this novel podcasting idea today: DVD commentaries in podcast form. Damn! What didn't I think of that first? Anywho, here is a DVD commentary by The Spoilers for the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. This particular commentary features none other than the Code Monkey himself, Jonathan Coulton. Just pop the DVD in and press play along with the podcast and you are transported to an MST-type world. Damn, what a great idea.

Jawbone #109: Calling Dr. Shlabotnik

It's almost the first of May...and you know what that means...a new Jawbone! We have a wrapup of the Dave Devries show, Sweeps Month on Jawbone and about pediatricians. Today in Podcasting

I had the honor of being a guest on Today in Podcasting last week. We chatted about the show, the podcaster art calendar, about podcasting in general and broken caveman speak. One of the hosts had some serious Skype problems and couldn't talk in complete sentences. Poor guy. It's actually one of the best interviews I feel I've done about the show. Plus, Today in Podcasting is a great podcast. My part comes in around 34:00 minutes into the show.

If you're interested, you can listen to the show here.

Happy President's Day!

Yet another visual interpretation of the Thing A Week. This time the song is called The Presidents. I'm too lazy to write down my comments again on this blog, so you can see my comments on this foray into digital painting at my Flickr page.

Even More Hodgman and Coulton Magic

Yes, you may think this blog is just a conduit for Jonathan Coulton and John Hodgman, and that we are just shills for them, but I can't get enough of these guys. I was sent a link to Bookcast featuring Hodgman and Coulton performing the Areas of My Expertise theme song and of course, Hobo Matters. It's a really cool podcast and well worth a listen especially if you've never seen Hodgman and Coulton live, like us. Check out the Bookcast here. Thanks to Diane for the link.

Mad Creator

Seems like there's been nothing but wonderful creative inspiration filling the Jawbone e-mail box lately. here's nother incredibly inspiring art site courtesy of Tracy: Mad Creator. Between this site and Dave Devries over the weekend, I think you can expect some totally cool art coming soon from the Jawbone Studios.

My Collaboration with Dave Devries

On show 108, our guest Dave Devries mentioned that we would collaborate on a drawing after the podcast. After we went off air, we went downstairs and very sleepily worked on a drawing together. I only wish it would had been earlier and we would have had more time. As it turned out, we were both dead tired and all I could think of drawing was a 50's style robot. Dave ended up doing most of the work, but he did an incredible job of inking in my lame pencil. Anywho, here is the fruits of one of the coolest weekends I've spent in a while. Thanks Dave for trying to do the best with my art.
