  1. Good show. Hadn't checked it out before, but you guys are kinda funny.

But hey - listen - while Aaron brings up a point that MP3 audio technology has existed for years now on PCs - it is actually the METHOD OF DELIVERY that he didn't really get. The fact that I can leave iPodder on overnight and have my MP3 player full of programs in the morning. The use of RSS feeds to feed all the stuff into one central place.

Did they take existing technology and bring it together and then slap a name on it? Sure! But the use of RSS with enclosures was new.

And where does it all go from here? Eventually when everyone has a web connected mobile device and there's broadband through the wireless networks (cellular and otherwise) you WILL get content that you want - on demand AND up to date instantly. Imagine getting in your car, and it's already downloaded the latest traffic report that was posted (in an audio file). It's say - 3 minutes old. Ok so it's not purely instant - but it's darn close. THat's when the technology will REALLY excel. Yeah - we're a few years out, but it's coming.

  2. Hey hey, glad you enjoyed it. Great point.

Agreed, Podcasting is a convergence of technologies that have been around for a while, it's the culmination of these, and a schmancypants name, that has made it what it is.

I'm not ignoring the RSS feed and the conduit with which it's delivered, it's all just a wrapper using other technologies. RSS had been around before Podcasts. And you are correct, podcasting would be nothing without the delivery mechanism.

I highly doubt (and anyone can correct me if i'm wrong) that Adam Curry developed RSS or any of the Podcast software. I guess his first 15 minutes of fame wasn't enough. :P

I come from the radio station line of things, so I guess that needs to be established too.. The technologies for doing radio stations of your own (a la podcasting) have been around for years. It's really amazing that it's taken this long for something like this to catch on.

  3. I certainly hope your marketing buddy takes more time to investigate his clients' situations than he did to get an overview of podcasting before he opined.

Not only did he miss the method of delivery difference that rob points out, Internet-delivered audio had another gold rush about the time flashplayers started hitting the market, but the RIAA/CARP fiasco aborted its growth. Doc Searles nailed this one on his IT garage blog.

So the new boom is greatly aided by the fact we seem to be in a safe harbor while the RIAA figures out if podcasting and attaching mp3s to emails is a good thing for sales or a bad thing.

On Vegas, if you play blackjack be wary that the rules aren't the same from house to house, and whether a casino hits a soft 16 or 17 is a way to read how generous they are.

And if you're going to play the machines, the video pokers are the only machines that admit what their payback percentage is. What they pay for a full house and flush (9/6 for example) pretty much tells you the whole story.

And as Steve Wynn will be the first to tell you, the only way to make money in a casino is to own it.

    But good luck anyway.

  4. I too, come from the radio side of things. 10 years in radio before getting out to do....IT stuff. So I know what you mean. I do a streaming audio station, I've played with a lot of the technologies. The cool thing about podcasting is it is to radio what blogging is to journalism. Ok it took a while to catch on, but so did blogging. How many people kept a diary on their website? Probably a lot - but it didn't get big till it had an easy publishing mechanism and a catchy name.
